Thesis or Field Experience (3 credits)

Students must choose to either write a master's thesis OR undertake a field experience. The thesis course may be repeated for a total of 6 hours. The second thesis course may be used in place of a major elective course. The field experience may be an internationally oriented internship, study abroad program, or other international activity. For students who study abroad and earn at least 3 credits from a foreign institution, INR 6946 may be taken for zero credits so long as the student earns a total of 36 credits needed to graduate from the program. All activities used to earn credits for this requirement must be approved in advance by the MAIA graduate director. The student will register for 1 of the following courses to complete the thesis or field experience requirement:

  • INR 6971 Thesis (1-3 credits)
  • INR 6946 Field Experience in International Affairs (0-3 credits) 

Contextual Courses (0 credits)

Students must demonstrate competency at the intermediate level or above in a spoken language other than English. This requirement is usually met by completing the intermediate-level course sequence (Intermediate I and II) or one 3000- or 4000-level course in Chinese, French, or Spanish.
