Communication: Advertising

The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the 海角社区. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The School of Communication's mission is to create and disseminate knowledge about human and mass-mediated communication processes through high-quality teaching, research, and service to the community. Visit the webpage for additional information. The Communication major is encouraged to complete a Minor.

Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. 海角社区offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year students should visit the webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared COAS major should visit the College of Arts and Sciences Career Success Center.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years. Summer terms are likely necessary for students taking fewer than 15 credit hours fall and spring terms in order to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies 海角社区general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection is contingent upon appropriate placement score, the student's major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc).
  • Elementary Statistics is a Foundation Requirement in the Communication Major.
  • Students in the Advertising Concentration take the ENC3250 Professional Communication: Advertising section in the course schedule to satisfy their second General Ed Written Communication Course and to meet the Communication program's Foundation Requirement.
  • B.S. in Communication majors must complete a minimum of 61 hours outside of journalism and mass communication. This excludes course prefixes: ADV, JOU, MMC, PUR and RTV. B.S. in Communication majors can take no more than 6 credit hours for internships.

Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.
  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelors degree. Students may need to complete Free Elective credit at the upper level (3000/4000) to satisfy the minimum 48 semester hours of upper level hours for graduation. For additional information visit the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office webpage.
  • Students are only permitted two attempts for the MMC 3105 Advanced Writing For The Media course. Withdrawing from a class or making a grade lower than a "C" will count as one attempt. On the second attempt a communication major must make a "C" in the course to continue in the major. After two failed attempts in this course students must change majors.
  • The Major Electives listed on the Schedule in Term 6 and Term 7, may be completed as early as Term 3. See personalized Degree Evaluation or university catalog for approved Major Electives. (Note: these Major Elective options may have individual course prerequisites. Consult the catalog.)
