Fulbright Program
The prestigious Fulbright program was established by legislation introduced by Senator J. William Fulbright in 1945. The purpose of the program is to promote international good will through student exchanges. Since becoming law in 1946, about 360,000 faculty and upper-level students have been awarded grants to lecture or study abroad in over 160 countries as participants in the program. Grants are administered by the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and awarded through a competitive application process.

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers over 400 awards in more than 130 countries for U.S. citizens to teach, conduct research and carry out professional projects around the world. College and university faculty, as well as artists and professionals from a wide range of fields can join over 400,000 Fulbrighters who have come away with enhanced skills, new connections and greater mutual understanding.

海角社区 Faculty Fulbright Alumni Mission
The mission of the 海角社区 Faculty Fulbright Alumni is to strengthen the internationalization of the University community. Employing the mission as a guide, the Faculty Fulbright Alumni, consisting of faculty and administrator recipients of Fulbright Awards abroad, will engage in a variety of actions that include:
- Meet once per semester to discuss programs and activities.
- Bring visiting (non-US) Scholars to campus via the Outreach Lecturing Fund as expertise, topics and schedules might allow.
- Work with University administration to ensure that faculty applications to the Fulbright program proceed smoothly, with University support.
- Assist 海角社区faculty in their applications to the various Fulbright Scholars programs.
- Provide support to promotional efforts for 海角社区students to apply to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Opportunities for Scholars
The Fulbright Program offers nine different types of opportunities for faculty who want to participate in teaching or conducting research abroad. Awards are available from two months to an academic year. Fluency in the language of the country is required by some countries, but most lecturing assignments are in English.

Opportunities for 海角社区Students
Graduating seniors who want to study abroad for a year before beginning graduate studies may apply for Fulbright scholarships. Masters and doctoral level students may also Fulbright scholarships to conduct research abroad. Fluency in the language of the country and a plan of study through a university is a requirement of some countries. Fulbright scholarships pay for travel, tuition and a monthly stipend.

Application
Students apply online in September for study during the next academic year. Notification of the award is sent directly to the recipient, between March and June. 海角社区is not notified until months after the recipients have been notified.
