Eating Disorders and Body Image

love your body written on a chalkboard

Do you experience stress around your eating and exercise habits? Do you find yourself feeling preoccupied with your weight, body shape and size, and food choices? The 海角社区Counseling Center may be able to help.

What types of eating and body image issues does the Counseling Center treat?

The Eating Disorder Management Team (EDMT) at the counseling center treats a wide range of eating and body image issues.

Some of the most common concerns are:

  • Dieting, fasting and restricting food
  • Overeating and binge eating
  • Purging through the use of self-induced vomiting or laxatives
  • Compensatory behaviors, including over-exercising
  • Dissatisfaction with one's appearance, shape, or weight
  • Obsessive thoughts about food or one's body
  • Anxiety about eating in front of others

Due to the outpatient setting of the Counseling Center, we are only able to treat students with mild symptoms. Each case will be assessed on an individual basis in order to make recommendations that best fit each student's needs.

What does treatment look like?

All students seeking services at the counseling center must first complete an initial assessment by emailing us at counselingctr@unf.edu or walking into our main office (located in building 2, Room 2300). Following your assessment, your counselor will then consult with the EDMT staff to review your case and make recommendations.

How do I know if my eating or body image is a problem?

If you are uncertain or concerned about your eating habits or body image, we encourage you to schedule an initial assessment through our office. You may also complete a brief,  to gain more information.

What if my eating or body image concerns need more specialized treatment than what the Counseling Center can provide?

Each student is unique, and therefore, treatment will vary from person to person. Even two individuals with the same diagnosis may need different treatment approaches. Our staff does its best to assess each student's case and to provide recommendations that are consistent with current research and standards identified by the .
