I. OBJECTIVE & PURPOSE

To describe the requirement for health insurance coverage for 海角社区 (UNF) international students with a visa status of F or J, and for students in a program of study with a requirement for proof of health insurance coverage.

II. STATEMENT OF POLICY

All international students with a visa status of F or J and students in a program of study with a requirement for proof of health insurance coverage must provide health insurance documentation prior to registration. They may purchase the 海角社区sponsored policy or opt to purchase an alternate comparable policy. No international student in F or J non-immigrant status shall be permitted to register, or to continue without providing documentation that the student, and in the case of J visa holders, that their accompanying spouse and dependents have adequate medical insurance coverage for illness or accidental injury.

III. STATEMENT OF PROCEDURES

  1. The minimum requirements for international students are outlined by Florida Board of Governors Regulation 6.009, Admission of International Students to State University System (SUS) Institutions, at https://www.flbog.edu/wp-content/uploads/6_009-Admiss-of-Intern-Students-1.pdf.
  2. 海角社区requires the following health insurance plan benefits for international students (F and J visa holders) in addition to the minimum standards listed above:
    1. Overall plan deductible: maximum of $500 per year.
    2. Inpatient/outpatient prescription medication: must include coverage of $1,000 or more per policy year.
    3. A minimum of $100,000 coverage, 80% in network/60% out of network, for preventive/wellness services as outlined by HealthCare.gov at https://www.healthcare.gov/preventive-care-adults/
  3. The programs of study requiring proof of health insurance are reviewed on an annual basis and listed on the 海角社区Student Health Services website (/brooks/shs/health-insurance.html). The requirement for proof of health insurance is also annotated in the student handbook for the program.
  4. The process to demonstrate compliance to health insurance requirements can be found online at /brooks/shs/health-insurance.html.
