Educ Leadership - School Leadership

Program Mission Statement

The Master of Education in Educational Leadership program is intended for those who wish to work in leadership positions and administrative careers in education. The MEd program provides a theoretical and conceptual knowledge base and practical application required for principalship and for Florida Level I Educational Leadership certification.

Courses required in the program address the Florida Educational Leadership Standards and the Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE) competencies and indicators.

The Educational Leadership MEd program meets the educational eligibility criteria for certification in Educational Leadership (All Levels) in the State of Florida. Students are required to pass all three portions of the Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE) in order to graduated. Graduates will qualify for a Professional Florida Educator’s Certificate.

Student Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able:

Knowledge of Literature of Discipline (req)

  • Students will conduct a full literature review on a specific research topic.
  • Students will use varied sources and forms of information to plan for effective instructional leadership, including the utilization of school data, teacher evaluation, and professional development to improve the instructional capacity at a given school.
  • Students will demonstrate competency in leadership for student learning.

Independent Research/ Professional Practice (req)

  • Students will develop a research proposal or an action research project in an area of educational interest with a full literature review.
  • Students will implement strategic planning processes to align programmatic initiatives and professional activities with identified needs and the school and district vision/mission.
  • Students will demonstrate competency in systems leadership.

Professional Skills (opt)

  • Students will demonstrate understanding of school finance basics and capacity to apply that understanding to the development of a plan to address a reduction in the budget allocated to his/her school, much like the reductions being expected of administrators in schools and districts throughout the country.
  • Students will demonstrate competency in organizational development.

Communication (opt)

Students will demonstrate understanding of school-community relations and the capacity to engage stakeholders in the development of plan to increase the level of school-community collaboration in ways that contribute to the teaching and learning process. The activity is designed to meet the expectations of a community-based transformational learning (CBTL) experience.

Other (opt)

Students will demonstrate knowledge and application of basic legal principals related to student discipline, special education, curriculum, and assessment as they relate to the work of a building principal. They will also demonstrate the capacity to identify and utilize relevant sources of regulatory information to inform decision making.
