Spanish for the Professions Certificate
Description
This undergraduate certificate consists of 15 credits (6 credits of prerequisites and an additional 9 hours of certificate course requirements) at the 3000-4000 level with the goal of providing students with the linguistic skills and cultural competency necessary for an increasingly global community, focusing on building cultural background and communicative proficiency while providing profession-specific language and cultural experience.
- At least nine of the fifteen credits must be earned with the 海角社区Spanish program in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
- Study abroad courses or internships in Spanish-speaking countries, may be accepted with the approval of the Chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
- All prerequisites as well as courses for the certificate must be passed with a C or better.

Carry out a range of communicative functions in Spanish, such as engaging in oral conversation modes with sufficient accuracy to be easily understood by a native Spanish speaker, reading and listening to authentic texts and materials, producing written discourse and composing professional and academic texts, and giving public oral presentations and readingsProduce sentence- and paragraph-level summaries and descriptions, verbally and in writing
Produce paragraph-level appraisals and recommendations, verbally and in writing
Produce paragraph-level reports and narratives set in the past, verbally and in writing
Prepare and extemporaneously conduct professional interviews in Spanish (e.g., client intake interviews, job interviews, and similar)
Summarize key elements of Spanish-speaking cultures, including practices, values, communication styles, history, and/or politics
Use technological tools and Spanish language resources available through electronic means, such as chat rooms, email, and the Internet, for professional, research, and classroom purposes
Compare information available only in Spanish with information on the same topics available in English to analyze the different perspectives and/or biases shown in the sources
