Timothy J. Groulx
Associate Professor and Area Coordinator, Music Education
Dr. Timothy J. Groulx is Associate Professor of Music Education (since 2014) and is the area coordinator and graduate program coordinator for music education. A native of Punta Gorda, Florida, he earned his Ph.D. in music education from the University of South Florida in 2010 where he was recipient of the Presidential Fellowship, and earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in Teaching from Oberlin Conservatory in 1999. He is also active as a band adjudicator, guest conductor, and clinician. He has published research in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, Journal of Band Research, Contributions to Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Music Education Research International, and Update!, and serves on the advisory committee for the International Journal of Music Education, Music Educators Journal, and Research Perspectives in Music Education. He has presented at research and in-service conferences throughout the United States as well as in Austria, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. His research interests include history and sociology of music education, particularly issues regarding race and school segregation, cultural representation in band literature, and has developed a method for instrumental music education that focuses on student creativity and expression prior to music reading. Dr. Groulx was a recipient of the 海角社区Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in fall, 2022.
